Terms for Ordering Virtual Patient Cases

Data Protection and Handling of Patient Information

Real, authentic patient cases MUST NOT be entered into the patient simulator,
nor may any details be included that could enable an individual patient to be identified.

If a virtual patient case is based on a real patient case, the following principles must be observed:

Direct personal identifiers relating to the patient, such as the patient’s name or personal identity code,
MUST NOT be used.

The necessity of including the following information should be carefully considered:

  • Location of care:
The location where the patient received care may be included if this is necessary for educational purposes.
  • Patient age:
As a general rule, the patient’s exact age should not be stated. A broader age range or approximate age should
be used instead. Where age is relevant, expressions such as “approximately 40 years old” or “35–40 years old”
may be used. If an exact age is essential for educational purposes, it may be stated. This may be the case,
for example, in patient cases involving children or adolescents.
  • Patient’s occupational group or specific occupation:
The patient’s occupational group or specific occupation may be stated if this is necessary for educational
purposes and if doing so does not reveal the patient’s identity. Particular caution should be exercised in
relation to rare occupations or positions.

Responsibilities for Content

The Service Provider is responsible for ensuring that the patient case is produced in accordance with the agreed
specifications and in a technically functional format.

The person ordering the case, or a reviewer designated for the case, is responsible, in the use specified by the
Customer, for ensuring that the medical and pedagogical content of the patient case is appropriate, that the case
is suitable for its intended purpose, and that it complies with the requirements applicable to such use.

Each party undertakes, for its own part, not to add to the patient case any identifiable personal data,
confidential patient information, or any other information that could directly or indirectly enable an individual
patient to be identified.

Copyright and Rights of Use

1.
Copyright in patient cases produced under these terms is held jointly by the member of the teaching staff in
medicine or dentistry who ordered the case and by MedEdu Oy.

2.
The Customer is granted the right to use, modify, develop, and otherwise make use of the patient case it has
ordered for teaching, training, research, and other academic purposes without any separate compensation being
payable to the Service Provider, unless otherwise agreed in connection with an individual order.

3.
MedEdu Oy is granted the right to use, modify, develop, and otherwise make use of the patient case it has produced
in its own business operations, educational development activities, and the provision of its services without any
separate compensation being payable to the Customer or to the member of teaching staff who ordered the case,
unless otherwise agreed in connection with an individual order.

4.
Universities that have licensed the MediOppi platform may be granted the right to use the patient case for teaching,
learning, assessment, and the development of teaching. A member of teaching staff also has the right to modify a
previously produced patient case to suit their own teaching purposes. In such cases, that person is responsible
for the modifications they make and for ensuring that the medical and pedagogical content of the modified patient
case is appropriate for the intended use.
